Hickey says there’s a planned tram to link Adelaide Airport to the city, noting the Downer Group has indicated it’s willing to stump up $500m and operate the project as a commercial enterprise under a 30-year contract. He says the SA Government is reluctant to hand over public transport to private enterprise. Sutherland says they didn’t know about this plan. He says they think it’s a great idea and that they can’t see why public infrastructure can’t be a mix of public and private. He says they suggest the tram go up to Donald Bradman Drive up into Victoria Square and connect to the King William St Tram, which will be faster.
Continuing interview with Civil Contractors’ Federation Chief Executive Phil Sutherland. Hickey says the double-decker bus operating between the airport and the city is completely empty. Sutherland believes the project will be boon to SA.
