Channel 7, Adelaide TODAY TONIGHT hosted by Rosanna Mangiarelli
The Northern Connector will link north and south through Adelaide and is part of what it is hoped will be a civil construction-led recovery given rising rates of unemployment in South Australia.
SA has Australia’s highest unemployment rate and lowest rate of business investment, and it is braced for the closure of major companies including Alinta and Holden. In this context, Civil Contractors Federation CEO Phil Sutherland says the road is vital and a good news story for the state. The connector is part of the $3.5b South Road upgrade. Sutherland says the South Road Superway was important. The connector will link this with the Southern Expressway.
Flinders University professor Rocco Zito says it will give freight movements non-stop access from northern areas like Barossa Valley to places like the port and South Road. Zito says projects like Seaford Rail Extension are geographically local but have benefits that will extend throughout the metropolitan area. At the federation long-term unemployed are given training using simulators that will hopefully aim to work on such major projects. Eleven of 13 who trained in an all-women’s course have already got civil construction jobs. Jamie Jones says Active Asphalt has been really good to her.
